Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata: The Complete Guide (2025)

The Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata is one of the most spectacular and underrated outdoor adventures in the American West. Tucked into Ashley National Forest outside Vernal, Utah, this route features iron rungs bolted into canyon sandstone, a suspension bridge over a river gorge, and cable traverses with nothing but air below you — all in a setting most people have never heard of.

Over 17,000 people completed the route last year. With the right gear and this guide, you can too.

What Is a Via Ferrata?

Via ferrata (Italian for "iron road") is a style of mountain route where iron rungs, cables, and bridges are permanently fixed into the rock. It sits between hiking and rock climbing — more physical and exposed than a trail, but accessible to anyone with a reasonable fitness level and no prior climbing experience. The critical difference from hiking: you must wear a via ferrata-specific harness and lanyard at all times. These keep you clipped to the cable if you fall.

Route Overview

The Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata is the longest via ferrata in the United States, with multiple sectors totaling roughly 8 miles through the canyon. The route travels through dramatic sandstone walls, crosses the suspension bridge over the gorge, and climbs through several technical sections with fixed iron rungs and cables.

  • Location: Ashley National Forest, Vernal, Utah
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging (K2–K4 UIAA scale)
  • Duration: Half day 4–6 hrs · Full day 8–10 hrs
  • Season: March through November (check conditions in spring/fall)
  • Permit: Free, no permit required
  • Guide required: No — this is a self-guided public route

Difficulty and Who Can Do It

Sections of the route range from K2 (moderate, suitable for beginners with exposure) to K4 (serious, sustained climbing with significant exposure). You do not need prior rock climbing experience, but you should be comfortable with heights and have a solid base of physical fitness. If you've done challenging hikes and aren't afraid of exposure, you're ready for Ashley Gorge.

Children can do the route with a parent present, though the minimum recommended age is around 10–12 depending on the child's fitness and comfort with heights.

Required Gear

This is not optional — you cannot safely do this route without:

  • Via ferrata lanyard — a Y-shaped shock-absorbing lanyard that clips to the cable (e.g., Petzl Scorpio)
  • Sit harness — a climbing harness the lanyard attaches to
  • Helmet — to protect from rockfall and impact (e.g., Black Diamond Half Dome)

You can rent all three as a complete kit from Gorge Gear Co — pick up in Provo on your way to Vernal, return when you're back. A full kit is $40 for 1–2 days. You don't need to own any of this equipment.

Getting There

Ashley Gorge is located in Ashley National Forest, approximately 20 miles south of Vernal, Utah. From Salt Lake City, the drive is about 3 hours via US-40 through Provo and Duchesne. From Provo, it's about 2.5 hours. The road to the trailhead is paved to the forest boundary and turns to dirt — a high-clearance vehicle is recommended but not always required depending on conditions.

What to Bring

  • Via ferrata kit (harness, lanyard, helmet) — rent from Gorge Gear Co
  • Sturdy hiking shoes or approach shoes (trail runners work fine)
  • 2–3 liters of water per person
  • Snacks and lunch for a full-day trip
  • Sunscreen and a hat — the canyon gets hot
  • A light windbreaker or fleece for the shaded sections
  • Gloves (optional but nice for the metal rungs in cold weather)

Tips for Your First Visit

Start early. The canyon heats up quickly in summer. A 6–7am start puts you through the technical sections before the midday heat.

Don't rush the lanyard transitions. At each anchor point on the cable you'll need to unclip and re-clip your lanyard to the next section. Take your time — always have at least one arm of your lanyard clipped in at all times.

Sign the Uintah County waiver. In addition to the GGC rental waiver, Uintah County requires all participants to complete their own waiver before accessing the route. Sign it here before you go.

Go with at least one other person. The route is remote. Having a partner is safer and makes the experience significantly better.
