What Closes the Route

  • Rain or snow: the county closes the course. Wait for the rock and rungs to dry.
  • Ice: late in the season, rungs and cables can ice up on cold mornings even when it's dry. Bring gloves and start after the sun hits the walls.
  • Wind: doesn't close the route, but the sky bridges sway a lot.
  • Heat: the cliffs get direct afternoon sun. In summer, start early and carry at least 2 liters of water.

Questions

Is the Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata open year-round?

No. Uintah County lists the season as generally March 1 through November 30, weather permitting. It is open sunrise to sunset, 7 days a week, during the season.

Does the Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata close for rain or snow?

Yes. The county states that if it is raining or snowing, the course is closed. There is no gate or staff on site, so the call is yours: wet sandstone and iron rungs are extremely slippery.

Can you climb the Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata when it is windy?

Wind does not close the route, but the county notes it makes the climb more challenging and the sky bridges sway a lot.

Who do I call about current conditions?
