About the Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata — Vernal, Utah
The Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata is the longest public via ferrata in the United States, located in Ashley National Forest just outside Vernal, Utah. Climbers work up fixed steel rungs anchored straight into the canyon wall, cross two suspension bridges high above the river, and move across several exposed, cable-protected sections along the way.
The route is self-guided and open to the public from March 1 through November 30, sunrise to sunset — no guide required. Our rental calendar runs the full season, right through November 30 — though bear in mind ice on the iron rungs often ends the practical climbing season before the official date does, so check conditions for a late trip. The full day takes 8–10 hours; half-day options run 4–6 hours. To legally access the route you must carry a UIAA-certified harness, via ferrata lanyard, and climbing helmet.
