Via Ferrata LanyardRental in Utah.
Already own a harness and a helmet? Then the lanyard is the only piece you're missing — and it's the one piece you can't improvise. Rent a certified via ferrata set for Ashley Gorge for $25, no full kit required.
Why a Sling Won't Do
This is the part people get wrong, and it's worth being blunt about because the consequences are serious.
The problem with improvising
On a via ferrata you clip to a fixed cable anchored every few metres. If you fall, you fall to the last anchor — potentially several metres onto a static system. Slings, daisy chains and quickdraws have no way to absorb that energy, and the forces involved can injure you badly even though the gear itself holds.
What a real lanyard does
A via ferrata lanyard has a built-in energy absorber that pays out under load and caps the force transmitted to your body. That's the entire reason it exists, and it's why EN 958 certification is a requirement rather than a suggestion. Ashley Gorge enforces this — you can be turned away at the route.

Common Questions
Can I use a regular climbing sling or daisy chain instead of a via ferrata lanyard?
No. A via ferrata lanyard has a built-in energy absorber designed to limit the force of a fall onto a fixed cable. Slings, daisy chains and standard quickdraws have no energy absorption and can generate forces high enough to cause serious injury in a via ferrata fall. Homemade setups are not permitted at Ashley Gorge and the route is monitored.
I already own a harness and helmet. Do I need to rent the full kit?
No. If your harness and helmet are in good condition and certified, you only need the lanyard. That is $25 for up to two days, versus $40 for the full kit. Any UIAA or CE certified climbing harness and helmet are fine.
What lanyard will I get?
A Petzl Scorpio or a Salewa Premium Attac. Both are EN 958 certified with a built-in energy absorber and dual CE-rated carabiners, and both are inspected before every rental.
How much does it cost to rent a via ferrata lanyard in Utah?
$25 for up to two days from Gorge Gear Co, then $5 per additional day. Pickup is self-service from our lockers in Roosevelt, Utah, available 24 hours a day.
