How to Get to the Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata: Directions, Parking and the Approach Hike

Short answer: The Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata is in Ashley National Forest just outside Vernal, Utah. From Salt Lake City, take I-80 east to US-40 and follow US-40 east through Heber City, Duchesne and Roosevelt to Vernal, about 3 hours in total. From Vernal it is roughly another 15–30 minutes to the free trailhead parking lot, which has a porta potty. From the lot, a hike of under a mile with about 600–700 feet of climbing takes you to the start of the route. There is no cell service at the gorge, so download everything before you leave town.

Driving From Salt Lake City

  1. Take I-80 east up Parleys Canyon.
  2. Exit onto US-40 east toward Heber City.
  3. Stay on US-40 east through Heber City, Fruitland, Duchesne and Roosevelt.
  4. Continue on US-40 to Vernal, then follow the county's map to the trailhead.

Plan on about 3 hours from Salt Lake City to the trailhead without stops.

Driving From Provo or Orem

  1. Take US-189 north up Provo Canyon to Heber City.
  2. Turn onto US-40 east.
  3. From there it is the same drive: Duchesne, Roosevelt, then Vernal.

Plan on about 2.5–3 hours from Utah County.

The Last Few Miles: Vernal to the Trailhead

The trailhead is in Ashley National Forest north of town. Estimates of the drive from Vernal range from 15 to 30 minutes depending on where you start. The last few turns are not well signed, so use the Google map on the county's official Things to Know page, or search "Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata" in Google Maps, and start navigation while you still have signal in Vernal.

Parking and Facilities

  • Parking: a free parking lot at the trailhead. No parking permit is needed.
  • Bathroom: a porta potty at the lot. There is no bathroom on the course, so use it before you hike up. The county asks climbers to carry a WAG bag and pack out any waste.
  • Private land: there is private land near the gorge. Stay on the signed trail and respect closures so the area stays open to the public.

The Approach Hike

From the parking lot, follow the signs to the via ferrata access trail. It is a little under a mile with roughly 600–700 feet of elevation gain through desert scrub, and most people take 30 minutes to an hour. Wear your harness or carry it in your pack, and keep your helmet handy. There is a practice area near the start where you can get used to clipping in before the real route.

Download Before You Go

You won't have cell service at the trailhead or on the route. Before you leave Vernal, make sure you have:

  • Offline directions to the parking lot
  • The official route map PDF
  • Your signed Uintah County waiver, and the safety video already watched
  • Your Gorge Gear Co locker code, if you haven't picked up yet
