Guided vs. Self-Guided at Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata: Which Is Right for You?
Short answer: You do not need a guide for the Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata. It is a free public route, and climbers who meet Uintah County's requirements can go self-guided with certified gear. Hire a guide if it is your first time and you are nervous, if anyone in your group falls outside the 90–265 lb range, or if you want to try the Phase 2 big wall.
Self-Guided: Who It's For
Self-guided works well if:
- You are comfortable with heights and reasonably fit.
- You can put on a harness and check that it fits.
- You understand the clip-one-at-a-time rule and will follow it every time.
- You are happy to make your own calls about weather, pace and when to exit.
What you need: a certified energy-absorbing via ferrata lanyard, a harness and a helmet for each climber, plus the signed county waiver. Cost: just the gear rental. A full kit from Gorge Gear Co is $40 for 2 days.
Guided: Who It's For
A guide is the better choice if:
- It's your first via ferrata and you'd like someone to teach you the gear on the wall.
- Anyone in the group is outside the 90–265 lb self-guided range.
- You want to do Jur-Ass-Kicked or the Helix Ladder without prior experience.
- You are bringing a youth group or a mixed-ability group and want a professional to manage it.
Only Uintah County–certified guides can guide on the route. The current list is on the official Ashley Gorge site. Guided trips include gear and cost more than renting.
Side by Side
- Route access: free either way.
- Gear: self-guided climbers rent or bring their own. Guided trips include it.
- Schedule: self-guided climbers start whenever they like in daylight. Guided trips run at set times.
- Decisions: self-guided groups choose sectors and exits themselves. A guide picks a route that fits the group.
- Best for: self-guided suits confident, fit adults. Guided suits first-timers who are nervous, mixed groups and the hardest sectors.
A Good Middle Ground
Many first-timers go self-guided on the moderate Phase 1 sectors (Outlaw, the Soup & Dynomite Sky Bridge and Abduction) and save the big wall for a later trip. Read our beginner safety guide before you decide.
