The Pump

The technical crux of the original route. Sustained near-vertical rungs where forearm endurance, not strength, decides how you feel at the top.

Phase 1

The Pump earns its name. It climbs the canyon wall in long, near-vertical sequences of iron rungs with few genuine rest stances, and it only travels one direction — once you commit, the way on is up.

Shally's Ladder is the section people remember. It is relentless rather than technically tricky: the moves themselves are straightforward, but they keep coming, and climbers who pull with their arms instead of standing on their feet run out of forearm long before the top.

The practical advice is unglamorous and it works. Keep your arms straight and hang off your skeleton rather than your biceps. Push with your legs. Stop at every decent stance, shake one arm out at a time, and move on before you are fully pumped rather than after.

It also has the best views on Phase 1, and most people who find it hard still rate it their favourite part of the day.

What to Expect

  • ▸One-direction only — no reversing once committed
  • ▸Shally's Ladder: the sustained crux sequence
  • ▸Highest sustained exposure on the original route
  • ▸Bypass trails exist above The Pump if your group is struggling

Good fit if

Reasonably fit climbers who are comfortable with heights and have at least a little via ferrata or scrambling experience.

Skip it if

Your group includes anyone shaky on the earlier sectors, or anyone who found Outlaw tiring. Take the bypass trail instead — there is no shame in it and it rejoins the route further along.

You'll Need Certified Gear

Every sector at Ashley Gorge requires a via ferrata lanyard with an energy absorber, a climbing harness and a certified helmet. Homemade setups are not permitted and the route is monitored. We rent full kits for $40 and lanyards on their own for $25, picked up from our self-service lockers in Roosevelt — 30 minutes from the trailhead, open 24/7.
